Abhishek Bachchan & Aishwarya Rai Are Reuniting On Screen After 7 Years

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan & Abhishek Bachchan

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan & Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are one of the best couples we have in Btown. They are stylish, look admirable together and of course, are too much in love! They have done a few movies together and evidently share a comfortable chemistry – case in point, Guru, Raavan and Kuch Naa Kaho etc. (My personal favourite is the item song Kajra Re, in case you are wondering!)

If you are an #AbhiAsh fan like us, you will be pleased to know that the two are likely to team up for Gulab Jamun, which is being produced by Anurag Kashyap. Although their is no official statement about the project, we hear that it is being directed by a newcomer.

Super excited to see these two reunite after 7 long years! What about you guys?

Om Puri Was Honoured At The Oscars – Here’s What His Family Has To Say

Om Puri

Om Puri

As part of the 89th Academy Awards, those in the industry who have passed away were acknowledged in a special segment. Jennifer Aniston introduced it, while Sara Bareilles performed a musical tribute.

Om Puri, who has worked in several Hollywood films, was one of those honoured in the montage. Other legends like Carrie Fisher, Prince, Bill Nunn, Curtis Hanson and more were also remembered.

His family has now released a statement, expressing their gratitude:

The only Indian actor to have worked consistently in Hollywood and British cinema for the last 25 years, without a fuss and letting his work speak for itself, today the Academy of Motion Pictures acknowledged his contribution at its 89th Awards. The first and only Indian actor to be acknowledged thus. Thank you Academy. Thank you everyone. We miss you Om. We miss you lots. Ishaan and Nandita Puri.”

A great gesture indeed.

Is Mahesh Bhatt Going To Bring Pakistani Artistes Back To India?

Mahesh Bhatt

Mahesh Bhatt

The film industry went through a rough patch last year when BJP imposed a blanket ban on Pakistani artistes working in India. The move was not appreciated by many from the film industry, especially because it caused a hindrance to a few films that were already in the pipeline.

However, Mahesh Bhatt is reportedly bringing Pakistani artistes back to India – for a song on the theme of cross border peace. According to a report in DNA, he has approached Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali and also plan on getting AtifAslam and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan on board. Reportedly, this is for a play called Milne Do, which will be staged in Delhi on June 8 and Mumbai on June 23.

Although all the Pakistani artistes who have been approached have shown a keen interest in the project, it remains to be seen if the noble initiative faces an obstacle in the form of protests. Fingers crossed!

5 Things We Loved About Rangoon

Rangoon

Rangoon

Vishal Bharadwaj’s Rangoon is intrinsically a film about romance in the time of war and is set in pre-independent India in 1943 amidst the on-going World War II. The film touches upon the two on-going movements back then – one of Ahimsa by Mahatma Gandhi, and the other of Subhash Chandra Bose – a more violent attempt to get India independence along with the Indian National Army.

Amidst this, we have three main characters – the stoic Nawab Malik (Shahid Kapoor), an Indian soldier who has just spent eight months as a prisoner in Japanese custody. He somehow escapes this, establishing himself as the brave, unabashed soldier who will do anything for his country. Then there’s the ridiculously good looking Russi Billimoria (Saif Ali Khan), a well established studio owner who used to once be an action superstar until he loses his hand in a stunt accident. Lastly, there’s Julia (Kangana Ranaut), a leading action heroine, Rusi’s muse and Nawab’s lover. She’s physically strong yet emotionally vulnerable as she discovers herself through the forests of Arunachal Pradesh.

I watched the film yesterday and here are five things we loved about the film.

Shahid & Kangana’s Chemistry

Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut

Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut

Absolutely electrifying. These two were terrific and brought so much intensity and passion to the screen, it’s almost hard to believe there are rumours doing the rounds that the two don’t get along. This pairing, honestly, might just be my favourite one. I was rooting for them right from the very beginning. PS – I must add that this was one of Shahid’s best performances so far. A full 10/10 for his acting chops.

Saif Ali Khan’s Fabulous Performance

Saif Ali Khan, Kangna Ranaut

Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut

This film has made me realise that Saif Ali Khan is one of those actors who has been drastically under-appreciated. Saif as the jealous and controlling fiancé is absolutely amazing and proves what a fine actor he is.

Music

Good, soulful music is always synonymous with a Vishal Bharadwaj film. Ye Ishq Hai is undoubtedly the highlight of the film.

Supporting Cast

As great as the leading trio was, the supporting cast were the ones who held the film together. Satoru Kawaguchi as the Japanese soldier was incredible. His comic timing was on-point and he makes you feel a range of emotions. You want to be angry with him but can’t help rooting for him either. His scenes with Shahid and Kangana stand out in the film, and that says quite something about his potential. Saharsh Shukla also doesn’t go unnoticed as Julia’s spot boy.

Julia Is A Total Badass

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut’s character is the heart of Rangoon. She’s ruthless, fights the bad guys with her whip, jumps from one train to the other. She’s tough yet beautifully vulnerable and brings to the fore all the shades of being a woman. What was interesting is that Julia is the one actress who could bring commercial success to the film and her studio, bearing a striking resemblance to what Kangana is like in real life. She’s one of the few female actresses who can carry off a film just as well as a male actor, and this without a doubt is Kangana’s film all the way.

PS – I want to add again that Shahid Kapoor was AMAZING in the film!

If you’ve been a fan of Vishal Bharadwaj’s films, Rangoon is a must watch. Head to the theatre and let us know what you thought of the film. :)

Amitabh Bachchan Just Said No To Queen Elizabeth!

Amitabh Bachchan, Queen Elizabeth

Amitabh Bachchan, Queen Elizabeth

Amitabh Bachchan has been working for years together yet he it seems like he hasn’t tired from it. He still has as much zest and zeal as a 20 year old and it makes you wonder where he gets this energy from. Bachchan was recently invited by the Queen and Prince Philip for the UK-India Year Of Culture launch, but given his prior commitments and busy schedules, he was forced to give this coveted event a miss.

His spokesperson confirmed the news to Indian Express.

Yes, Mr Bachchan has been extended a rare invitation by Queen Elizabeth and Buckingham Palace to grace the UK-India Cultural Year reception. Unfortunately, however, he will be unable to attend due to prior commitments.”

Would’ve been so great to see him there. Hopefully, next time! :)

Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan’s film receives a MIXED response from critics

Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor

Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor

Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan’s much awaited film Rangoon has finally released! What has caused more hype to the film apart from the stellar cast is the man donning the director’s hat, Vishal Bharadwaj. The story revolves around individuals and how the dynamics of love change their lives. Evidently, it is a love triangle between the stars in the film set during the time of World War 2. The movie delivers war, love, deceit in forms that only Bharadwaj can compile together! So with the film finally releasing, critics have given it a mixed response. From good to mediocre to bad ratings have been given to the film. Although it’s mostly the storytelling that has miffed the critics, who expected a lot more, performance wise, they’ve all done well. Reviewers can’t stop raving about the brilliance of Kangana, who quite possibly owns the show but not without the astounding performance of Shahid and Saif! Check out the reviews of critics of the industry.

BollywoodLife: 4 stars

The three protagonists – Kangana, Shahid and Saif deliver their best performances even in a plot that sometimes curbs them. Julia is a brave heroine, she fearless and not shameful of admitting that she’s a bastard.

India.com: 3.5 stars

With so much exposure to Hollywood movies for our audience, it’s not easy to do justice to the setting. But Vishal Bhardwaj and his team deserve a pat on their backs for recreating the foregone era. Be it the production design, the beautiful locales used and and the props, the technical values are simply brilliant. Pankaj Kumar’s camera work effortlessly captures the hues of the forest, the pristine green waters of the river as well as the dark grey clouds that are a metaphor for the looming doom for some of the characters.

India Today: 2 stars

At two hours and forty seven minutes, Rangoon doesn’t satisfy either as a period love story or a rousing drama about India’s fight for independence. Working on a big canvas, Bhardwaj has enough grandeur and glamour (the sets and costumes are striking) but is short on an engaging narrative. The overblown and protracted climax, with a touch of Tarantino thrown in, makes one giggle.

Hindustan Times: 2 stars

It may be one of the most awaited films in recent times but Rangoon is a royal misfire.Within minutes of the movie’s beginning, you realise the promise of a heart-wrenching period drama was a farce — a set-up to promote a self-indulgent film that doesn’t know what it wants to be. The director Vishal Bhardwaj has desperately tried to play to the gallery, and has miserably failed.

Scroll.in

The movie’s strongest scenes are set in the Army camp where Russi and Nawab duel, literally and figuratively, for Julia’s soul. Since Rangoon equates love for another human being with love for the country, this romance, like the movie itself, is all over the place.

Firstpost: 2.5 stars

On the face of it, this is a setting bubbling with possibilities, and considerable swathes of Rangoon (especially in its second half) do mine that potential. Ranaut delivers a seemingly effortless, chameleon-like performance as a woman who is by turns fragile and fierce, hurting yet invulnerable, a child who grows into a woman during the course of the film. The actress and the character she plays here, possess a body that is as intriguing as her mind: she appears delicate, yet explodes with energy and athleticism when life demands it of her.

With such mixed reviews, what would you do this weekend? Will you go watch Rangoon or will you skip it? Tell us in the comments section below and stay tuned to this space for hot scoop.

Rangoon movie review: Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan’s earnest performances make Vishal Bhardwaj’s film worthy

Rangoon

Rangoon

For so long now we’ve been entertained by the Rangoon stars – Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor through their war of words during interviews and events. In fact, Shahid in an interview even hinted that this Vishal Bhardwaj film would be his last movie with Kangana, but after watching the movie we hope that he was just kidding. Coz Kangana and Shahid together share a very organic and raw chemistry that is rare to find. And  without wasting anymore time let’s dive into Rangoon and tell you what were our thoughts about VB’s latest venture…

What’s it about

Rangoon is a love story set in the 1940s. A time when India as a nation was at the peak of it’s freedom struggle. It was also when our countrymen were most divided with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose proposing opposite ideologies to fight the British. A time when amidst all turmoil in the country the film industry was booming and yet struggling to stay alive. The film precisely delves into these three aspects and revolves around Julia (Kangana Ranaut), an actress who portrays bold characters on celluloid. She is unaffected by the ongoing freedom struggle and is happy dreaming about becoming Mrs Billimoria. Yes, Julia is head over heels in love with Russi Billimoria, an action hero who has now turned into a famous filmmaker. However, when the country is amidst a freedom struggle nobody is unaffected, not even the elites in the movie business. And hence Julia and subsequently Russi (Saif Ali Khan) end up finding themselves in different kinds of troubles thanks to Jamadar Nawab Malik (Shahid Kapoor). When it is a Vishal Bhardwaj film it has to be about love, passion, betrayal and more and Rangoon has all shades of emotions.

What hot

The three protagonists – Kangana, Shahid and Saif deliver their best performances even in a plot that sometimes curbs them. Julia is a brave heroine, she fearless and not shameful of admitting that she’s a bastard. Even when a royalty tries to dig into Julia’s private life in a bid to embarrass her, she literally unleashes her nonchalance on the sneering ladies. There’s not one moment in the entire film that Kangana let’s her character Julia down. She is naive, sweet, vulnerable under her strong demeanour. She is a woman helplessly in love and not ashamed to admit it.

Shahid Kapoor aka Nawab Malik is a man on a mission and nothing can distract him, not even love. He gives in to his instincts of passion, but not even a damsel in distress, who he also loves, can take his eye off his real goal. Shahid plays an army captain/jamadar with ease and lends easily to his character. He’s rugged, mysterious and at the same time very very affectionate, he is the real hero of the movie with almost zero grey shades. The only flaw our tragic hero has is, his love for a woman who is already in a relationship with another man, who unfortunately is on the enemies side.

Russi Billimoria is the character that you end up hating and sympathising with at the same time. Unlike Nawab he’s not the righteous one. He’s filled with flaws, and Saif Ali Khan deserves full marks for making Russi a character with many many shades. He’s a shrewd businessman who can embrace the British for his personal gains. He controls Julia and will not let love take away the focus from his movies. And yet, he’s the one who will leave his father’s well established business to be with a woman he loves. He’s mean, control-freak, business-minded, jealous, insecure and human. And even in a limited canvas Saif shows that’s he’s an actor to watch out for.

The characters in Rangoon are equally good, be it the British commander Harding, played by Richard McCabe or then Julia’s makeup man Zulfi, played by Saharsh Shukla. Both these characters that seem harmless and funny in the beginning surprise you as the movie progresses. McCabe is super entertaining and almost manages to steal the show from Ms Julia on many occasions.

Vishal Bhardwaj does deserve a mention for bringing three actors who are strikingly different under one project and getting them to deliver their best. He also deserves applause for taking you to the era of freedom struggle. The Indian National Army version of Rabindranth Tagore will give you goosebumps. The war scenes and detailing are impeccable.

What’s not

There are three things that could have made Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon near perfect. Unlike his earlier films the director detoxes the film of any kind of layers. The presentation is simple and straight and it’s great, except that at points you almost feel the lack of any kind of surprise making it too predictable. Even that could have been passed off, but what doesn’t work is the pace, some unnecessary songs that kill the narrative and a little more of Russi aka Saif Ali Khan in the film.

What to do

If you are a Vishal Bhardwaj fan, let us warn you that this might not be his best, but we bet you’ll see another kind of a storyteller here. And yes, he does deliver a movie that is embedded with fine performances from the cast and great visuals by cinematographer Pankaj Kumar and that makes the movie deserving of a watch despite its flaws.

Rating:4 out of 54 Star Rating

You’ll Wish You Worked For SRK When You Hear What He Gave His Staff For V-Day

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan isn’t called the king of romance for no reason. Women across generations fall in love with the superstar, and it’s for very good reason: he knows just the right things to do, and say, to make people feel special. He did that yet again on Valentine’s Day, when he gave all his female employees some spectacular gifts.

According to DNA, every girl on his team received roses, a designer handbag and an expensive smartphone. SRK apparently picked these gifts out himself, as many of the ladies on his team have been with him for years. It seems that the girls walked in to the office on Valentine’s Day to find the gifts laid out for them, and were quite emotional about the gesture.

Time to send in your resumes to Red Chillies, ladies!

“Full Credit To Natasha For Sticking By Me” – Varun Dhawan Finally Confirms His Relationship

Varun Dhawan, Natasha Dalal

Varun Dhawan, Natasha Dalal

Varun Dhawan is one of the most good-looking actors in Bollywood currently and is a hot favourite with all the girls. Unfortunately for them, this dishy actor is taken. Varun has been in the news for his relationship with his childhood sweetheart Natasha Dalal for years now. While Varun has never denied his relationship with her, he has always refrained from directly talking about it. The two were spotted at Shahid Kapoor’s birthday bash and were also clicked together on Valentine’s Day.

In a new and interesting turn of events, Varun finally spoke with abandon about his relationship and being seen in public with Natasha in an interview with India.com.

I am cool about it. In fact, I’ve always been cool about it. There’s nothing to hide. I just don’t want the focus to shift from my career to the relationship. That’s why I don’t talk much about it. What can one say about spending time with loved ones? I’m not denying anything at all, just that I don’t like to discuss it.”

When asked about where he sees the relationship going, here’s what he said.

I see it reaching a good place. (Smiles) She’s quite a handful so full credit to her for sticking by me. She’s one of the best people I’ve come across in my life.”

Awww, finally! :D Remember when Varun spoke about how he’s in a phase where he wants to get married and have children, in an episode of Koffee With Karan? Do you think the time is finally arriving? Either way, we’re just glad he’s finally talking about it! :)
