Bhoomi Movie Review

CAST: Sanjay Dutt, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shekhar Suman, Sharad Kelkar
DIRECTION: Omung Kumar
GENRE: Drama
DURATION: 2 hours 15 minutes

SANJAY DUTT IS BACK

BHOOMI STORY: A shoe-smith Arun Sachdeva(Sanjay) is shattered when he discovers that his daughter, Bhoomi (Aditi) has been raped by Dhauli (Sharad) and his gang of three. The father and daughter grieve for a bit and then plan revenge.

BHOOMI REVIEW: Distasteful as it may sound, rape and retribution seem to dominating Bollywood. After Maatr and Mom, Omung Kumar, who showed a spark with Mary Kom, seems to have fallen into the trap of making formula. And while every filmmaker argues that movies on rapes are ‘socially-relevant'; you keep asking yourself—is all the gore on screen justified.

Here, our very own Arun and Bhoomi are a doting father-daughter team living in Agra. They tug at your heartstrings with their chirpybaap-beti routine of cooking meals, colouring beards and combing hair. However, after a point the bittu-beti endearments rankle. But that’s not the only thing that rankles here.

When Bhoomi gets raped just a day before her wedding, you know which way the film will go. The insensitive cops, the lame public prosecutor, the even lamer defence and the whole court-room drama where it has become fashionable to discuss the heroine’s virginity makes you want to scream. Statistics of rapes are rattled off by all and sundry and the word `rape’ is used so frequently that it almost knocks you dead.

But like it’s said, every cloud has a silver living; Bhoomi has Sanjay Dutt. Returning to the marquee after his incarceration, the actor wears the lines of his face with confidence. You can tell right away that the lion has aged but he’s got terrific screen presence.

Aditi is also remarkable, first as the stuttering, sweet girl and later as the woman seeking revenge. Sharad is too much the caricatured villain from the 80s, mouthing stupid lines. The overall writing is clunky. Artur Zurawski’s camera work is efficient. Sachin-Jigar have composed a couple of foot-tapping numbers that don’t necessarily have recall but when they are playing, you find yourself grooving.

Watch Bhoomi for Dutt. He’s from that era of larger-than-life heroes who get you to whistle even when he is killing people. You may not approve of his thirst for blood but you can’t fault his swagger.

Haseena Parkar Movie Review

Haseena-Shraddha

CAST: Shraddha Kapoor, Ankur Bhatia, Siddhant Kapoor
DIRECTION: Apoorva Lakhia
GENRE: Biography
DURATION: 2 hours 4 minutes

HASEENA PARKAR STORY: This courtroom drama tries to decode the life and criminal activities of India’s most wanted fugitive – Dawood Ibrahim’s late sister Haseena Parkar, who allegedly headed her brother’s crime syndicate in Mumbai and ran proxy business for him.

HASEENA PARKAR REVIEW: As the film shuttles between past and present, it passionately lists down the gang wars and events that led to Dawood’s rise as a crime lord-terrorist and its repercussions on his family, including his sister Haseena, who was summoned to the Court only once (2007), despite the many offences registered against her.

Incidentally, the recent arrest of Dawood’s brother Iqbal Kaskar (‘while he was having biryani’), from his Mumbai residence on charges of extortion, made one wonder why the bigger fish continues to roam scot free. While the siblings are obviously no saints, do they somewhere bear the brunt of belonging to the D family? This disappointingly shallow biopic tries to decipher this debatable thought.

However, given Apoorva Lakhia’s poor direction and penchant for making films on Mumbai’s underworld dons that ride on sensation over substance, all you get is a tanned Shraddha Kapoor who looks like she’s holding two kachoris in her mouth. The actress is ‘lucky’ to be getting biopics (she will essay the role of badminton ace Saina Nehwal next), given her limited acting skills. But let us clarify, Shraddha is not the weakest link here.

The treatment, jarring background score and setting, is equally sloppy as Dongri, Nagpada, Dubai, Mulund, Bhandup…all look the same. Also, the stereotypes are laughable. Siddhant Kapoor (badly dubbed) as Dawood, roams around aimlessly in Dubai, goes on candlelight dinners with random girls and chills in his bathtub as Mumbai burns (1993). The judge examining Haseena Parkar’s case, comes across as a nincompoop.

You walk into the film, hoping to understand the controversial journey of a woman, who became the aapa (elder sister) or the Godmother of Nagpada. But all you get is a silly costume drama that inadvertently victimises and thus justifies Haseena’s unlawful actions and warped sense of power under the pretext of ‘protecting her family’. While the intention is still subjective as it’s a filmmaker’s interpretation of a character, the film’s biggest drawback is its lack of depth.

The crime drama fails to offer an insight into Haseena’s life whatsoever as an individual, beyond her infamous identity as Dawood’s sister, who dropped her bhai’s name to settle property disputes, extort money from builders etc.

Newton Movie Review

Rajkumar-Rao-Starrer-Newton-First-Look

CAST: Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Raghubir Yadav
DIRECTION: Amit Masurkar
GENRE: Comedy
DURATION: 1 hour 46 minutes

NEWTON SOARS!

NEWTON STORY: Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk, is sent on election duty in the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh, which is under the control of the naxals. Despite the odds stacked against him, Newton Kumar tries his best to conduct a fair voting process in the region.

NEWTON REVIEW: In terms of entertainment value, ‘Newton’ takes on a completely unremarkable subject. After all, why would anyone want to watch a film on election woes in a remote jungle surrounded by Naxalites? Surely not your average moviegoer who is primarily accustomed to the glitz and glamour of escapist Bollywood. But in the recent past, some films have tried to blur the line between sheer ‘paisa vasool’ quotient and essential social commentary. ‘Newton’ jumps over that divide and runs off with a brilliantly acted, impeccably written, lovingly shot, humorous, yet poignant film that Indian audiences didn’t ask for, but need.

As a character Newton Kumar is so idealistic, he’s ready to literally have his face rubbed in the dirt as long as he can fulfil his duty. His rigid demeanour is not tainted by the corruption and cynicism that we, as Indians, have come to embrace. Rajkummar Rao embodies this role with a blinking innocence in his eyes, hiding the intelligence of an actor who has a deep understanding of the persona he’s playing. In fact, Newton’s personality traits are so well defined by Rajkummar, that it would be really interesting to see this character react to a variety of other complex and uncomfortable situations. Along with him, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav put on a masterclass in acting – each one of them shines when they occupy the screen. Tripathi as Aatma Singh, in particular, is the perfect opposite of Newton’s naivete, in his weary scepticism. Together, they make an odd couple of sorts, but also perfectly showcase the two ends of the spectrum in our thought process, when we contemplate the state of our ‘democratic’ country.

But their performances would ring hollow with the lack of a meaningful screenplay. Writer-director Amit Masurkar and Mayank Tewari have painfully captured the bittersweet essence of the people of an obscure jungle that’s far-flung from civilization. This is also evident in the cinematography; each shot is thoughtfully structured and lovingly composed. Combined with a subtle sound design that’s hard to miss – this film has everything going for it. ‘Newton’ has dared to take on an issue that our vast majority turns a blind eye to, and slaps us out of our blissful ignorance. Amidst laughing, it’ll leave you thinking, which – and we need to be reminded of this – is what good cinema should do. Both your funny bone and your grey cells will thank you for watching it.

Will Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhant’s Haseena Parkar break the jinx of movies with real-life brother-sister jodi turning duds?

Haseena-Shraddha

One of this week’s major releases is Haseena Parkar, a biopic based on a notorious real-life personality who also happened to be the sister of dreaded fugitive don, Dawood Ibrahim. Shraddha Kapoor plays Haseena, and in an interesting piece of casting, her elder brother Siddhant will be playing Dawood in the movie. Siddhant had played important roles in movies like Shootout at Wadala and Ugly, but this is the first time he will be acting in a movie with his sister. Haseena Parkar is directed by Apoorva Lakhia and is scheduled to release on September 22.

Teaser-Haseena-Parkar-Brother-sister

Earlier we had movies where brothers or sisters shared screen. For example, Salman Khan, Arbaaz and Sohail acted together in quite a few movies with either of their siblings, with Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya being the only movie where all three are together (though Arbaaz, in a cameo, doesn’t share screen with either of the two brothers). The Sen sisters, Raima and Riya were together in a forgotten romcom called The Bachelor. Aamir Khan and Faisal Khan did Mela way back in 2000, while the Kapoor brothers have also done their share of movies together.

But we rarely have movies with a real-life brother sister jodi, mainly because it is rare for both the siblings to click in the industry. Like for example, while Sonakshi Sinha attained stardom, we cannot say the same about her brother Luv Sinha, whose debut movie tanked miserably. But then, we do have a rare few movies that star a real brother-sister jodi, but not a single one of them worked at the box office. Check out the examples below…

Huma Qureshi – Saqib Saleem

Dobaara-Stills-1

Movie: Dobaara

The talented siblings headlined the cast in the Oculus remake, but the horror movie failed to attract crowds in the theatres.

Shahid Kapoor – Sanah Kapoor

Shaandar

Movie: Shaandaar

Shaandaar was pretty hyped before its release for being a Karan Johar production, directed by Queen fame Vikas Bahl and starring Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor in the lead. But the movie tanked at the BO, thanks to a bizarre screenplay. However, Shahid’s sister Sanah, who played Alia’s sister in the movie, won a lot of praise for her performance. Too bad we haven’t seen her in a movie after that.

Saif Ali Khan – Soha Ali Khan

Soha-Ali-Khan

Movie: Go Goa Gone

Soha Ali Khan was seen in a dialogue-less cameo as Kunal Kemmu’s ex in the zomcom, that starred Saif Ali Khan in the lead. While the movie got positive reviews and developed a cult following later, it didn’t get the same love at the box office.

Rani Mukerji – Raja

Rani-Mukherji-Raja-Mukherji

Movie: Chori Chori Chupke Chupke

In this Salman Khan starrer, Rani’s brother Raja was seen in a cameo during a wedding song. Despite the controversy during its release, thanks to the financier’s underworld links, the movie tanked at the box office.

To cut short a long narrative, movies starring real-life brother-sister jodi haven’t found love with the masses. So will Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhant break the jinx with Haseena Parkar? Guess we have to wait for the movie to release on Friday to know the answer…

Lucknow Central Movie Review

Lucknow-central

CAST: Farhan Akhtar, Diana Penty, Ronit Roy, Gippy Grewal, Deepak Dobriyal, Rajesh Sharma, Inaamulhaq, Ravi Kishan
DIRECTION: Ranjit Tiwari
GENRE: Drama
DURATION: 2 hours 13 minutes

PRISONERS OF FATE BREAK FREE…

LUCKNOW CENTRAL STORY: Kishan Girhotra’s (Farhan) dreams of becoming a singer are shattered when he is falsely accused of murdering an IAS officer in Muradabad. Pronounced guilty, he is jailed for the crime he never committed. Deprived of the freedom he rightfully deserves, the sun shines on him once again even in captivity, as a bunch of prisoners and an NGO worker (Diana Penty) become his voice and the wind beneath his wings. Can he accomplish his dream of forming a band in the prison or does he manage to escape the dungeon?

LUCKNOW CENTRAL REVIEW: Based on true life events, Lucknow Central is a feel-good, human, prison-break drama that succeeds in manipulating you emotionally, despite being predictable and filmy in portions. While the peg is somewhat similar (barring the under trial element) to the recent Qaidi Band, Lucknow Central has a distinct execution and is way more evolved.

What essentially works for LC is its classic ‘winning against all odds’ theme. The inmates finding a reason to live and a sense of belonging within the four walls of the Lucknow Central jail instead of their homes is what tugs at your heartstrings. Shunned as misfits and outcasts by the society including their families, the prisoners find solace in each other’s company. Ranjit Tiwari handles this aspect of human alienation and friendship, beautifully. His understated sensibility resonates with his talented star cast, starting with the very impressive Ronit Roy. The actor stands out as the curt, conniving and clever jailer. Sadly, his character is reduced to being a toothless tiger eventually.

Farhan ably carries the film on his shoulders but his efforts to nail his desi character are partially visible. For instance, his flawed English pronunciation seems a tad artificial and inconsistent. (Read Corut for court, rohk for Rock and naan existent for non-existent). Nevertheless, he gets the mannerisms and innate innocence of a small town guy right and makes you weep for his misfortune. Deepak Dobriyal is excellent as always and so are Rajesh Sharma, Inaamulhaq and Ravi Kishan. Diana Penty and Gippy Grewal play their parts well.

Considering the film revolves around music, Rangdaari is a beautiful composition that sums up this fascinating tale of dreamers and fighters, who refuse to give up on life or faith.

Simran Movie Review

first-look-and-teaser-of-kangana-ranaut-starrer-simran

CAST: Kangana Ranaut, Sohum Shah
DIRECTION: Hansal Mehta
GENRE: Comedy
DURATION: 2 hours 4 minutes

KANGANA SHINES BUT SIMRAN FALTERS

SIMRAN STORY: Praful Patel (Kangana) is a 30-year-old divorcee living in Georgia with her middle-class parents. A housekeeper by profession, she gets drawn to a life of crime after her tryst with gambling at a Las Vegas casino. One bad turn leads to several more and before you know it, Praful is in a sordid mess.

SIMRAN REVIEW: The nice thing about Simran is that it ventures into an area where the Bollywood heroine offers no defence for being a badass. The protagonist, a woman with an undaunted spirit, lives and loves by her own set of rules. She refuses to have ‘sex without protection’ and is constantly up for adventure. She doesn’t think twice about slipping into a life of crime just to support her `character flaws’. So far so good.

Besides the premise, everything else about the film is improbable. The writing falters in parts and naturally the execution follows. The way Praful goes about robbing banks and gets away scot-free, even after leaving her finger prints all over and notes scribbled with lipstick seems unbelievable. The media brands her the ‘lipstick bandit’, and the Atlanta cops and the victimised bank employees seem like a bunch of jokers, who keep harping on the fearless bandit’s modus operandi, and yet, they fail to foil the half-a-dozen heists! It is almost like Hansal Mehta is attempting a comic story. Nothing wrong there, but if is a tale that is being recounted in lighter vein, then it should have at least made the audience laugh some more.

The only one who is having a good time here is Kangana. Whether she’s docile or daring, the actress goes about her screen business with a flourish; getting her mannerisms pat. However, there are occasions when even she gets carried away with the constant focus. But then again, is she really to be blamed? The filmmaker doesn’t even have another noteworthy star on celluloid to share the limelight. Simran’s parents and her fiancee, Sameer (Sohum) and other actors–foreign and desi–don’t quite add up.

Frankly, you can’t emotionally invest in Simran or root for her as much as you might want to. But when you watch the film, you will find yourself warming up to her occasionally, because she’s all you’ve got. Let’s give Kangana her due.

LEAKED! Aamir Khan’s look from Thugs of Hindostan which will leave you shocked

aamir-khan-ians-photo-for-inuth-2

There have been a lot of confusion about what will be Aamir Khan‘s look in Thugs Of Hindostan. When he started sporting a long and dense beard, everybody speculated that it was for the YRF project. But turned out it wasn’t. Later when he was seen in yet another funky getup which was again believed to be from the film but that too was not the case. In fact, the cool quotient of the star was for Secret Superstar and not TOH. Now we have a LEAKED image of the actor from the sets of the film but it will take a lot of concentration from your side to spot him in it!

Yes, when you see the image you will know why we are saying so. First of all, there are a lot of people in the image, so you have to zoom in to spot the star. And when you do so, you will be left amazed at the transformation. If you have managed to spot him by now, you are awesome but if you haven’t let us tell you, that the man who looks the most disheveled in the snap is Aamir Khan. Yes, the shabby, dirty with ragged clothes on is the man himself. As you all are aware, he plays a pirate in the film and guess that’s what his getup is.

Untitled-6

A few days back, DNA had reported that Amitabh Bachchan, who is also part of the film, and Aamir will have a massive sword fight in the film. “The action sequence being filmed in Mumbai is elaborate. Both, Bachchan and Aamir, are currently preparing for the tough task with the action-director, as both are famous for doing their own stunts. Since the two are known to be perfectionists, the scene is expected to be quite a highlight in this lavish film,” a source revealed to the daily. We wonder if this is from that scene!

Tumhari Sulu teaser: Vidya Balan is training to be SEXY and she’s awesome at it!

Untitled-1

We might not like her recent films in totality, but no one can fault any of Vidya Balan’s performances in her films. The teaser of her upcoming film, Tumhari Sulu is out and Vidya looks so adorable in it. We are guessing she is a simple homemaker who lands up a job at a radio station. And the best part is, she is a RJ for what seems to be a late night show, you know the ones where cheesy lines, pyaar, ehsaas and all that mush counts. We are sure you have heard those programmes while travelling post 11 pm in a train. Well, Sulochana aka Sulu has bagged such a job and is enjoying her alter ego as the sexy agony aunt.

Sulu

Vidya is simply superb as the simple housewife enjoys her ‘hot’ outing on radio. It is hilarious to see how the others around her react to her rather sultry voice. Tumhari Sulu is a slice-of-life film and director Suresh Triveni has beautifully and humorously captured the thought of how many housewives take immense delight in doing out of the mundane. There is a little bit of tentativeness, when she tells her programming head that this much sexy is just fine.

The actress had tried her hands in comedy before with Ghanchakkar but it did not resonate with audiences. There were a few hilarious scenes in The Dirty Picture (2011) that she absolutely nailed. She has a funny bone and Tumhari Sulu seems to be in a milieu she is so familiar with. Check out the teaser below…

The film also stars Manav Kaul, Neha Dhupia and RJ Malishka Mendonsa. Tumhari Sulu seems to be in the same space as English Vinglish but a lot quirkier. Well, the individualistic heroine is the toast of modern cinema and Sulu seems to be one of them. Stay tuned for more scoop and updates…

riya-sen-teaser

Initially while shooting for the web series, Riya Sen when Riya got to know about the steamy scene which was meant to be shot in an explicit manner, she went up to the director of the web series, Suyash Vadhavkar and conveyed that she would be highly unfcomfortable doing so. Obviously, the director then toned down the intimate scene considerably.

But post this controversy, the actress disappeared from films. So when Ekta was making Ragini MMS for web, it was this MMS incident that made her take Riya in the show. Kangana Ranaut: Simran will beat up her boyfriend if he leaks her personal details in public – watch exclusive video

Untitled-1

Kangana Ranaut will be back on the big screen with this Friday’s Simran. The trailer of the film seems like a quirky one and feel good flick. In the trailer Simran aka Praful Patel, the character is actually named as, is shown as the independent woman, who is happy and content in life, however she is a kleptomaniac and as an addiction of gambling. So when I caught with Kangana Ranaut and Simran’s director Hansal Mehta, in a BollywoodLife exclusive, I gave them few situations and asked them to anticipate how would Simran (Praful Patel, the character) would react. When asked about if Simran sees her boyfriend flirting with another girl, Kangana says that Simran will see another boy around and make her way through that.

Simran is a kleptomaniac in the film, so when the duo were asked what if someone steals something from her which she had also stolen in the first place, what would she do? Here, Hansal Mehta was quick to answer that Simran will beat up that guy because she too faced difficulty in stealing the stuff.

Then Kangana was asked what would she do if Simran’s boyfriend leaks her personal details in public, Hansal said, she’d definitely beat him up. Kangana added, “Bahut Pitoge” and  then added that she’d beat him up when they’ll be at home.

It’s a known fact that Kangana Ranaut was approached for Salman Khan’s Sultan but apparently she rejected the role and in return asked Aditya Chopra Sultan’s title role instead. So when they were asked if Simran bags a Salman Khan film how would she react, Hansal and Kangana both were of opinion that she’d ask for Salman Khan’s role.

Stay tuned for all the latest updates…
