Ae Dil Hai Mushkil movie review: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan steals the thunder from Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma

Ae dil hai mushkil

Ae dil hai mushkil

Karan Johar’s Diwali offering Ae Dil Hai Mushkil featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has finally hit theatres along with Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay. Is the movie worth your time this Diwali? Read our review to find out!

What’s it about:

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a film about love and it’s many shades. There is a track of unrequited love, one that’s a purely platonic, another that deals with the physical attraction, but more or less the film is about companionship and realising that one side love can also be fulfilling. Ranbir Kapoor plays Ayan an aspiring singer whose chance meeting with Alizeh played by Anushka Sharma results in the two experiencing and realising emotions their never felt before. Ayan and Alizeh start off as friends, both coming off breakups, one a serious relationship while the other a casual affair. Despite the length of it both Alizeh and Ayan experience heart break and process it differently. The storyline gets a dramatic twist when Ayan’s love for Alizeh isn’t reciprocated as per his expectation. Fawad Khan plays her ex boyfriend Ali who begs her to give their relationship another chance resulting in marriage. A heart broken Ayan finds love or rather lust the second time around in the arms of a poet Sabah played by the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Things get seriously complicated in the second half when Alizeh is diagnosed with cancer. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is complex and long. It is also indulgent yet relatable to situations we all have been through.

What’s hot:

Karan Johar’s forte is using popular culture to narrate a story with an universal appeal. His take on love and relationships is deep and flakey at the same time. The first half is light and the banter between Ranbir and Anushka extremely engaging. Props to the writers for using words and language that is not only current but also entertaining. References to other films, namely the ones from the 80s and KAran’s own are a major highlight. Like every other Karan Johar film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is glossy and extremely good looking. Performances are a major highlight with Ranbir being the stand out act. He owns Ayan like he’s felt every emotion being played out. It’s not just the heavy duty long monologues where he shines but even the small subtle reaction scenes to his co-actors make his performance that much more endearing. Fawad Khan manages to make a striking presence felt with his good looks and charm, only if he had a longer role. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks like she’s sashayed out of a beauty pageant and her moments with Ranbir have intense sensuality and passion. Lisa Haydon’s cameo is funny and the ‘vaatavaran’ line will soon become a catch phrase.

What’s not:

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’s biggest flaw is the lack of chemistry between its lead pair. For a film whose protagonist experiences love and loss multiple times with different people the execution of the narrative gets lost in translation. Ayan and Alizeh start off as friends only to get caught in a web of mutually unresolved feelings. When we revisit them in the second half their track is still stuck on an endless loop. Dialogues are too heavy and sound off when used in every day conversation. Sabah being a poet can speak in that dialect but when Alizeh and Ayan start their banter it just gets repetitive. Shah Rukh’s much hyped cameo fizzles out before you take that collective sigh. The plot goes downhill once Alizeh’s terminal illness track sets in. The scenes gets heavy and that cloud of ‘been there seen that’ looms till the very end.

What to do:

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has some really nice moments, but they are few and suffer the curse of a weak second half. Nevertheless watch it for Ranbir and Karan’s interpretation of love, loss and longing.

Rating:2.5 out of 5

Fawad Khan Has Finally Released A Statement About The Uri Attacks

Fawad Khan

Fawad Khan

Ever since the clash between Pakistani militants and the Indian army in Uri, there has been an uproar about Pakistani artists working in India. The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association even announced that Pakistani artists are banned from working in Indian films and television until “normalcy” returns.

One of the people to come under fire was Fawad Khan, who has already shot for the soon-to-be-released Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Things got worse when quotes attributed to him started doing the rounds on social media and WhatsApp groups – quotes where he allegedly says things like “Indian person’s heart is so small” and “My first priority is Pakistan.” While there was never any authentic source confirmed for these quotes, they regardless began doing the rounds and, from the looks of it, many people believed that he’d actually said them.

Fawad has now come out to release a statement, in which he makes it clear that he’s been in Pakistan since July – before the attacks and the resulting controversies. He also said that this is the first time he’s speaking about the matter, and has therefore not said anything else attributed to him.

Here’s his full statement:

I’ve been in Lahore since July as my wife and I had been expecting our second child.

I’ve received numerous requests from the media and from well wishers worldwide asking me for my thoughts on the sad incidents that took place in the past few weeks. As a father of two little children, I pray and wish like many others that together we can build and live in a more peaceful world. I believe we owe it to our children who will shape our tomorrow.

This is the first time I have spoken on the matter. Please disregard any other words attributed to me during this time because I have not said them. I thank all my fans and fellow artists from Pakistan, India and people in general all over the world who have shown continued support for their belief in love and understanding to unite a divisive world.”

Oh No! Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar & Mahira Khan Receive Threats To Leave India In 48 Hours

Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar

Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar

Recently, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya lashed out at Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt on Twitter, owing to the deadly Uri attacks. He blamed the filmmakers for roping in Pakistani talent. Now, recent reports suggest that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has threatened Pakistani artists to leave India within 48 hours.

Amey Khopkar of the MNS Chitrapat Sena said in a statement:

“We gave a 48 hour deadline to Pakistani actors and artists to leave India or MNS will push them out.”

He passed on this threat to filmmakers and producers who cast Pakistani artists:

“Pakistani kalakaar toh maar khaayenge hi, saath mein jo yahan producer/director hain unko bhi peetenge. (Not only will we beat up Pakistani artists but we’ll also not spare the producers/directors who cast them)”

This is not the first time Pakistani artists have received such a threat. Legendary Pakistani singerGhulam Ali‘s concert in Mumbai was called off by Shiv Sena twice due to a similar threat. The list of Pakistani artists who are strongly associated with Bollywood currently include, Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar, Mahira Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Imran Abbas and Mawra Hocane. We wonder if this decision will jeopardize their Bollywood career.

Fawad Khan to play Deepika Padukone’s husband in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati!

deepika-fawad-7594
Padmavati, based on the life of the Rani of Chittor in Rajasthan, is all about the queen and Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s (Ranveer Singh) obsession with her.

Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Ali Zafar were approached, but no one wanted to play second fiddle to Ranveer.

The Rani of Chittor has found her Raja, Rawal Ratan Singh and this search for the male lead of Padmavati has ended with Fawad Khan. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has finalised the Pakistani actor to star as Deepika Padukone’s screen husband in his period epic, Padmavati. Fawad was in Mumbai for the past couple of weeks, finalising the deal.

Says a source, “Bhansali wants 200 days from all his lead actors, including Ranveer Singh (plays Alauddin Khilji) and Deepika (Padmavati). Fawad has those days to spare. In between, he has Karan Johar’s production, but it should not be a problem as KJo and Bhansali share a good equation. So they will work it out. It’s too big an offer for Fawad to pass up.

FK and DP walked the ramp on Wednesday as Manish Malhotra’s showstoppers and their chemistry was noticed. Fawad has played a Rajput prince before in Khoobsurat and was liked in the part. In that movie, he wooed DP’s rival, Sonam Kapoor.

The source adds that Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Ali Zafar were approached, but no one wanted to play second fiddle to Ranveer. This is a step up for Fawad, who gets to work with SLB and a top actress.

Padmavati, based on the life of the Rani of Chittor in Rajasthan, is all about the queen and Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s (Ranveer Singh) obsession with her. The trouble is, that although the character of Padmavati’s husband Rawal Ratan Singh is an important one, he is perceived as a weak character as he is always outsmarted by the Sultan. So, no top actor is willing to take it up. Says a source, “Since Ranveer is playing the Sultan, the role of Rawal Singh also has to be of his takkar. Otherwise, the story won’t work.” Sanjay starts shooting for the historical this September.

According to an insider, “The first schedule is with Deepika and her husband’s character. The scenes between Deepika and Ranveer are being shot separately as they never meet in the film. Initially, a TV actor was to be signed, but Deepika put her foot down. A random actor from television won’t do for her. While she has no scenes with Ranveer, she shares some intense romantic and lovemaking scenes with her husband, so she wants a big star as her hero.”

YAY! Zoya Akhtar May Be Casting This Bollywood Hottie In Her Next Project

f1-1

We’re alllll about Fawad Khan getting great roles to really showcase his talent – how good was he in Kapoor And Sons? – and it looks like the actor just may be getting signed on for Zoya Akhtar‘s next film. Nothing has been officially confirmed as yet, but sources tell DNA that Zoya has given Fawad a brief about her film, and plans to meet him soon to have a discussion about it. Apparently, the director first approached Hrithik Roshan for the film, but after he said no, she approached Fawad since she loved him in Kapoor And Sons.

This sounds like something we’d definitely want to see, but either way – we’re just happy to be hearing news about a new Zoya Akhtar film!

Fawad Khan Replaces Saif Ali Khan In Yet Another Big Film!

Untitled-1-3

We cannot forget Fawad Khan‘s role in Kapoor & Sons. The role had gone to many actors before him and one of them was Saif Ali Khan. Fawad then replaced him in the Karan Johar movie.

This time again, Fawad has bagged a role in a Salman Khan Production titled Jugalbandi. Saif was earlier finalised for the role but things didn’t work out and Fawad stepped in. The movie will be directed by Sameer Sharma and will also star Anil Kapoor.

We’re looking forward to seeing more of Fawad on-screen.
