Maatr movie review: Raveena Tandon’s hard-hitting performance makes this revenge thriller watchable

Maatr

Maatr

Maatr which means Mother in English is a rape-revenge thriller that deals with the issue of increasing number of rapes in India. Film marks the return of one of the top stars of 90s, Raveena Tandon, who was last seen in a cameo appearance in Bombay Velvet. It is directed by Ashtar Sayed and also stars Madhur Mittal, Divya Jagdale, Shailender Goyal, Anurag Arora, Saheem Khan and Rushad Rana among others.

What’s It About

Vidya’s (Raveena Tandon) life turns upside down when she and her daughter, Tia (Alisha Khan) are abducted and gang-raped by Chief Minister’s son Apurva Malik (Madhur Mittal), his uncle and five of his friends. After the death of her daughter, being abandoned by her husband and being subjected to an unfair treatment by law, she decides to take things in her own hands and walks down the path of vengeance. Whether she succeeds or not…forms the remaining plot of the film.

What’s Hot

The first ten minutes of the film are the most unsettling experience I’ve ever had while watching a film in a long time. Having said that, the film scores most in the performance section. Each and every cast member gives a riveting performance. Raveena Tandon who is seen as a main lead on the big screen after 11 years nails her part of a grieving, vulnerable, broken mother. She has done quite a few hard hitting roles in the past in films like Daman (for which she won National Award), Satta etc and this performance goes right up there. Without giving much away, there is a scene in the film where her character says, “It’s okay…it’s okay” to an agitated teenage girl who has just witnessed a murder, disguised as death. In that particular moment albeit a brief one, she portrays anger, sympathy, happiness and menace, all at once.

A film works well when, in order to counter a strong hero, you have an equally strong, if not better, villain. Madhur Mittal as loathing Apurva Malik, makes sure you have nothing but sheer hatred for his character from the first scene till the very last. Madhur has acted in quite a few Hollywood films like Slumdog Millionaire and Million Dollar Arm and his menacing turn as rapist cum murderer is sure to get his character the brickbats and his performance the bouquets. I was bowled over by his performance. He is, in fact, the major reason you are engrossed in the film, if at all. Shoutout to the actors who played his friends and creepy uncle.

Divya Jagdale as Ritu (Vidya’s friend) and Anurag Arora as Inspector Jayant Shroff are first rate.

Talking about the revenge part of the film. Who doesn’t love a revenge thriller! and here most of the murders she plans are engaging. What I liked most about her revenge driven avatar was the fact that she didn’t overnight turn into a butt-kicker, even during the act of vigilantism, she was still a grieving mother and her fist fights were not well choreographed but rather messy which gave the film the realistic feel. The cinematography too helps the film get a realistic feel.

What’s Not

While the film scores well in acting department, it falters mainly in its execution and choppy editing. My first concern was the way Vidya’s husband (Rushad Rana) reacts when he is told that his wife and daughter are missing and subsequently when he is told his daughter is dead. I don’t know if it was intended by the director or not, the whole initial sequence involving her husband sort of trivializes the issue. I felt the character of her husband was shoddily written. That slackens the narrative whenever he appears on screen. Good thing is his scenes are few.

There is only one song in the film, that occurs twice and it was so not required. If at all it acts a roadblock. Also while I liked the way the initial murders are planned by Raveena’s character, the logic and common sense goes for a toss as she progresses her way towards the main boss. Even though you feel the angst while she finally avenges her daughter, the climax is underplayed and looks straight outta 80s movie. The film tends to get melodramatic at times but is saved by the performances.

Talking about choppy editing, there are few scenes where a dialogue can be heard but you can clearly see no lip movement by the actors involved.

At various junctures the transition from one scene to another was not smooth.

Also, I want to know if Vidya’s friend Ritu lives or not? If only the film was directed by an experienced director.

What To Do

The film has its fair share of snags but what keeps the momentum going is the fact that you feel content whenever Raveena’s character succeeds in her mission. The film will take you through various emotions of discomfort, angst, outrage, cringe, satisfaction to plain meh. Despite its flaws and an uneven plot, watch the film for its compelling, hard-hitting performances and the fact that it creates a world where justice is served someway or the other.

What made the Censor Board walk out of Raveena Tandon’s Maatr screening?

Maatr

Maatr

Raveena Tandon makes a fully fledged comeback through the social drama, Maatr that deals with women safety and child abuse, and is quite hard-hitting in the portrayal of the depiction of social evils. Maatr has Raveena Tandon go on a revenge-seeking spree after her daughter gets raped. However, the content of the movie has not managed to impress Pahlaj Nihalani and his Censor Board, if reports are to be believed.

As per a report in DNA, the Censor officials walked out of the screening of the movie, ten minutes after it began. The reason? Apparently, they felt they were not given the right idea by the makers about the content of the movie. A source close to the Censor Board revealed, “We were given a copy of the screenplay prior to the screening, so we know what to expect and which areas in the storytelling need our intervention. In this case, we realised in ten minutes that we were being shown a different film from what we had been given at the script level. So the screening had to be stopped.” Hmmm, just wondering if the officials get the time to read the screenplays of all the movies they watch before they get to watch the movie. And since when do our film-makers do ever follow the script to the T?

However, the producer of Maatr, Anjum Rizvi, has a different tale to narrate about what happened. He said, “The censor screening had to be stopped due to technical reasons. We are showing the film to the Board again.” Wondering what is true and what is not…

Earlier, the Board also found objections with the content of the movie’s trailer, as the producer revealed to DNA, “Unless you show such scenes, how do you convey to the audience what the film is all about? Without these scenes, the film looks flat. CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) guidelines state that violence and blood cannot be shown in trailers seeking a ‘U’ or ‘UA’ rating. If insisted upon, it will get an ‘A’ certificate. We wanted to release the trailer in the coming week, so we had to cut some shots, redo it and finally, we got an U/A.”

Raveena Tandon is all set to return to the big screen with her much-talked film ‘Maatr’. The actress got candid with Zoom and talked about the film that touched her heart in the recent times.

Raveena Tandon opens up on her equation with Twinkle Khanna.

Raveena Tandon and Twinkle khanna

Raveena Tandon and Twinkle khanna

It may be almost close to two decades since Akshay Kumar ended his relationship with Raveena Tandon and went on to marry and have two beautiful children with Twinkle Khanna, but a few still seem hung up on the equation the three share. At a recent event, Twinkle joked that she considered dropping social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham’s story from her novel after he stated that she looked like Raveena. This, in turn, gave rise to speculations that the actress-turned-author ‘took offence’ to the remark.
During the promotions of her upcoming film ‘Maatr’, Raveena was asked about her reactions to the same. Taking a mature stand, the actress said that she refused to believe these allegations without seeing for herself what Twinkle really said. When it was mentioned that Twinkle said it in good humour, Raveena then went on to state that they are “friends”. Stating that people in the film industry know one another, she also added that they all “meet each other regularly”.

While we may never know for certain what bond the two ladies share, Akshay was all praises for his former co-star saying, “It was a great honour working with Raveena. We have done many films together and also good songs. ‘Tip tip barsa pani’ is still one of my favourite songs. It is an amazing song. We have done four-five films and each one has been a hit in its own way.”

Read Raveena Tandon’s Extended Version Of Her Blog About Bollywood Scandals, With Props To Kangana

Raveena-Tandon-1

*Today Raveena Tandon wrote a column in the TOI about Bollywood scandals, particularly, murky relationship related. She described the way affairs were conducted in 90s Bollywood – secretly and with the threat of total annihilation of an actress’s career, should she reveal anything at all about it – fodder for a film in itself! (I guess we all kinda knew that. But some of the things she describes gave me the chills.) She even mentions that the media had some part to play in skewing public perception in the actor’s favour for reasons of their own. But today, social media has taken on the role of creating a more inquisitive public jury that doesn’t just believe everything they read. They discuss and debate and hear the case from the stars themselves. She goes on to high five Kangana for having some “balls” and the grit to take a stand. A far cry from what happened in the 70s where some starlets were traumatized to death – literally.

Here’s an extended version of the column that she just published on her personal blog. I warn you, it’s not the happy shiny version of Bollywood we would all like to believe.
