Film industry bodies decry threats against Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ hasn’t ceased to be in the headlines over the last few weeks. In a fresh turn of events, 20 bodies representing various factions of the film industry including filmmakers and technicians observed a 15-minute blackout in Film City on Sunday evening as a mark of protest against the bullying ways of supposed groups and the silence maintained by the governments of various states. The blackout was observed between 4.30 pm and 4.45 pm in the presence of over a thousand-strong crowd that comprised members of different associations and the aam junta.
Titled ‘Main Azaad Hoon?’, the protest was observed at the main entrance of the Film City studios in Goregaon to show the industry’s solidarity for Bhansali and to honour the creative forces of the fraternity. “We didn’t want to disturb the on-going work of our fellow producers, technicians and artistes which is the reason the duration of the blackout was only 15 minutes; but in those 15 minutes, no one shot a frame for their show or movie. Everyone peacefully resumed work because we know everyone is chasing a deadline,” said Ashoke Pandit (active member and office bearer at The Indian Film and Television Directors Association), adding, “What is also shocking is the strange unity with which all the political outfits are supporting the fringe groups in their act of hooliganism. The film was scheduled to open in cinemas on December 1 but now its release has been deferred and a new date is yet to be announced.

Firoz (Raja) Khan, the senior vice president of the Junior Artiste Association, believes that protests like this are important now to protect the bread and butter of the current generation of craftsmen and the future, too. He elaborated, “We don’t want the next generation to inherit fear from us. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of our best filmmakers who helms epics. Every department works hard to put a film like that together and so many of us earn our living by working on films like his. If filmmakers like him decide to not make films, whose loss do you think it is? Freedom of expression ka kya hua? I have worked with Bhansali and I know he is very sensitive to detail. He looks at every single junior artiste before a shot. If he has gone wrong somewhere, we have courts and the CBFC to pull him up. This open dhamkibaazi is not tolerable.”

Pointing out that they are expected to support every social campaign that the central government initiates,” Pandit said, “Amitabh Bachchan supports polio awareness. Several actresses have supported Beti Padhao Beti Bachao; Akshay Kumar and several other actors supported the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan. And what is the government doing when open threats are being issued to members of this fraternity? So far, nothing! Aaj Bhansali par ban aayi hai, khamosh rahe to kal hum sab par ban aayegi,” adds Ashoke.

Bhupinder Sayan, general secretary of the Indian films and television choreographers association, seconded Firoz Khan’s opinion and added, “We stand by our rights to work freely, without any fear and support Mr Bhansali when his professional freedom is being threatened. This problem needs a quick resolution. People have been asking questions about ‘Padmavati’ but are they giving him a chance to answer? Give him the space for it. If there is anything objectionable, the CBFC will direct accordingly. We cannot be dictated by fringe bodies. It affects the morale of an entire fraternity. We will take it to a point where the noise reaches the right ears. If the fringe groups have a reason to stand united, don’t we have ours?”

Deepika Padukone Reacts To The Dangerous Threats She Has Received For Padmavati

If there’s one burning topic that has taken over all the news channels, it’s that of Padmavati. The last couple of days have seen multiple and bizarre threats – from someone openly taking out their sword on national television to members of the Karni Sena offering a bounty of Rs 10 crores for the heads of Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali – it has been utterly disgusting and extremely sad.

The film has had to deal with a lot of troubles right from the time they were filming. The sets were destroyed and SLB was physically assaulted. Deepika’s rangoli at a mall too was destroyed by a bunch of goons – and all this was done to stop the film from releasing. It’s so ridiculous that people make open threats like these in public, and what’s even more ridiculous is that not many people from Bollywood have shown their support for the film. Kamal Hasaan took to Twitter to take DP’s side on the whole controversy and urged India to ‘wake up’.

Deepika finally reacted to the controversy when asked if she’d like to have better protection from the state. She told BBC World News,

In an ideal world, yes. I think it is too soon to tell… But yes it would be nicer to feel safer or protected at this point.”

She also added,

It is hurtful and it is sad. Cinema has the power to bring the people together, to unite people and to spread love. It is disheartening sometimes that people don’t recognise that.”

It is disheartening indeed and we hope this matter is resolved soon.

Kamal Haasan Supports Deepika Padukone And Padmavati With This Powerful Tweet

Padmavati has been embroiled in multiple controversies for the last couple of months. The film’s sets were destroyed by a bunch of goons, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was slapped and assaulted, and now to top it all off, they’ve threatened to not let the film release. From people taking out their swords on national television to the Karni Sena members offering a bounty to have Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali beheaded – this is getting messier, more disgusting and more dangerous by the day.

And what’s even sadder is that not a lot of industry insiders have come forth to support Padmavati. Except for a few including the cast of the film – Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor – coming out and condemning these threats, there has been a haunting silence from the rest of Bollywood. We hope they come out and speak up soon.

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan, who is very vocal of his opinions and has faced his fair share of flak for doing so, took to twitter to lend his support to DP and Team Padmavati.

Seriously. Wake up, India.

CBFC Chief Prasoon Joshi Slams Sanjay Leela Bhansali For Screening Padmavati Without Clearance

Padmavati is in troubled waters even as it inches closer towards its release date. Despite repeated clarifications from the cast & director Sanjay Leela Bhansali about not hurting religious sentiments, there is no clarity yet about the film hitting the screens on December 1.

Amidst death threats and ugly political agenda, Deepika Padukone is bravely promoting the film and the film’s male protagonists, Shahid Kapoor & Ranveer Singh are also hopeful of a positive outcome.

Meanwhile, the recently appointed chief of CBFC, Prasoon Joshi expressed his disappointment about Sanjay Leela Bhansali screening the film for select media people without getting a clearance first. Speaking to IANS about it, he said:

It is disappointing that the film ‘Padmavati’ is being screened for the media and getting reviewed on national channels without the CBFC having seen or certified the film. This compromises the role of systems and balances that are part of a functioning industry. It’s myopic to treat the certification process haphazardly to suit convenience. On one hand, holding the CBFC responsible and pressurising to accelerate the process. And on the other hand, attempt to subvert the very process, sets an opportunistic precedent.”

There were reports that the board has returned the film to the producers without certification, about which Prasoon said:

In this specific case, the film’s application came up this week only for review. The makers know and admit that the paperwork is not complete. The very disclaimer whether the film is work of fiction or historical was left blank and not stated, and on simply and legitimately being asked to provide documents, target the CBFC for looking the other way and delay. The CBFC is a responsible body and has the best interests of the industry and society in mind. Let not convenient casual methods be brought into practice. We all must have a responsible, mutually respectful and balanced approach.”

FYI, it all started with Arnab Goswami announcing on his channel that he has seen the film and did not find anything objectionable. Lucky boy, this one!

We hope Padmavati emerges as the winner of this ongoing battle and the film peacefully releases in theatres on the scheduled date.

It’s happening! Salman Khan confirms his film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali – read details

Salman Khan’s date diary is choc-a-block for the next two years, with Tubelight and Tiger Zinda Hai, Remo D’Souza’s dance film, sister Alvira Khan-Agnihotri’s untitled film, and brother Arbaaz Khan’s Dabangg 3. Now, the buzz is that director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali has approached Salman for a film, which he’s considering taking up.

If the project pans out, the two would be reuniting after a decade — their last film together was Saawariya in 2007. Salman and Bhansali had a fallout when the director chose to cast Salman’s arch rival Shah Rukh Khan in Devdas in 2002, and sidestepped him to cast Hrithik Roshan in Guzaarish and Ranveer Singh in Bajirao Mastani. However, last year, Bhansali paid Salman a visit at his home to clear the air. Since then, they’ve been quite cordial with each other. In fact, Salman was one of the first people to reach out to Sanjay after he was attacked while filming Padmavati in Jaipur.

Now that their estrangement is history, they may team up again. Salman confirms, “We’ve been discussing a script. If it does happen, it’ll happen only after I finish all the films that I’ve taken up.” Other than that, it will be a departure from Bhansali’s period films, Salman doesn’t know much about the project since he’s not had a script narration yet. “Sanjay will give me a narration once he finishes Padmavati,” Salman says.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali Has Two Options To Take ‘Padmavati’ Forward

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Now that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s dream project Padmavati will no longer be shot in Rajasthan, there are two options open to the opulent director.

Says a source close to the development, “Either he finds another desertscape on the scale offered to him in Rajasthan. Or he recreates the landscape in a studio. Either way, the film won’t be allowed to suffer in any way.”

In a series of emergency meetings after the repulsive attack in Jaipur, the film’s producers, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, have very clearly and emphatically stated they are with Bhansali on any decision he takes.

Sources close to the project say that getting a location with sprawling stretches of sand that resemble the Rajasthani landscape won’t be difficult.

Says the source, “The important thing is to not let the project suffer in any way and to make the film without any compromise. No matter what it takes, Padmavati will be back on the track within the shortest possible time. The principal actors Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have ensured Sanjay Bhansali their full cooperation.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Official Statement About The Attacks On The ‘Padmavati’ Sets

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

The attacks on Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his crew during the filming of Padmavati have shocked many in the industry. Several celebrities have come forth with statements of their own in support of the director, and now, SLB’s team has released an official statement on behalf of him. In it, they clarify that there’s no objectionable scene between Rani Padmavati and Allauddin Khilji (the rumour which seems to have motivated the attacks) and that they have been carefully researching the film.

Filming in Jaipur has been halted as of now, and the director has returned to Mumbai.

Here’s the official statement from SLB’s office:

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has shot two films in Jaipur and despite his love for Rajasthan, for the safety of his crew, we have decided to stop the shoot and leave the city post the shocking incident where miscreants damaged property and misbehaved with the crew on the shoot of ‘Padmavati’. SLB had directed the opera ‘Padmavati’ to packed houses in Paris and earned worldwide praise for it. He was inspired by the beautiful and courageous queen and is making a feature film on the story. We clarify that there is no dream sequence or any objectionable scene between Rani Padmavati and Allauddin Khilji. We have been carefully researching and making the film. In spite of this, the attack on the shoot and crew was uncalled for and was extremely damaging to the image of the beautiful city of Jaipur. We are grateful to the authorities at Jaipur who responded promptly and limited the damage on shoot. We are confident that Mewar will be proud of the film made on their revered queen. We do not want to hurt any sentiments and would appreciate if the local people support us in making this film and making their queen revered by the world.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali Offers Financial Help To The Family Of The Crew Member Who Died On Set

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

We told you a couple of weeks ago about a tragic accident that took place on the sets of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone starrer Padmavati. A painter, Mukesh Dakia, fell to his death while painting the sets despite high standard safety measures.

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his team recently reached out to the family and compensated them for the freak accident that took place. A source told us,

The unit is shaken by the unforseen incident. In fact , the team of Bhansali Productions proactively reached out to the deceased painter’s family and compensated them to the tune of 23 lakh as support during this challenging phase in their life. This took place in the presence of members of the Film Studios Setting and Allied Mazdoor Union and the late painter’s family. It has been a more than generous settlement and even the Union agreed and acknowledged Bhansali productions for the same .”

Ashok Dubey, advisor of the Film Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union added,

ilm Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union, says, “When Sanjay Leela Bhansali heard about the unfortunate incident on the set of Padmavati, he issued a cheque of Rs 20,80,000 from his production house ‘Bhansali Productions’ for the family of the deceased and a cheque of Rs 2,20,000 issued as wages of the workers on that particular day. So we have received Rs 23 lakhs in total from Bhansali Productions.”

Here are pictures of the same.
