Varun Dhawan’s film with Shoojit Sircar October will release on June 1, 2018

Varun and Shoojit

Varun Dhawan‘s next is a film by Shoojit Sircar and now it even has a release date. The film will release on June 1, 2018. Varun revealed the date with a tweet. He sounded very excited for the film in the tweet. He writes, “Super excited for this new journey! @OctoberTheMovie, my first alliance with @shoojitsircar da releases on 1st June, 2018. @ronnielahiri” We are definitely looking forward to this film because this is one mix which is simply unusual.

Varun Dhawan had previously made the announcement of the film on Instagram saying, “I have been an ardent fan of Shoojit da’s work and have always wanted to work with him. The film is titled October. Soojit da Ronnie and Juhi have always made good cinema Im very lucky to get a chance to work with them.” Since then we were pretty intrigued about this project. The actor had always wanted to work with the director. In an interview with HT, Varun said, “I am definitely very happy and excited. What’s amazing about him is that he is very sure about his vision. I have met him just now, so I am trying to get into that world, understand it. and the way the film is going to breathe and feel. It’s very different from anything I have done before.”

Talking about October, Shoojit had said, “It’s again an out-of-the-box kind of story. we started working on this film’s idea, which came from a small newspaper clipping, right before Piku (2015).” He further described it as “a very unusual, unconventional kind of a story” in the “slice-of-life and romance space”. There were reports that Deepika Padukone has been vying for the lead opposite Varun in the film but nothing has been confirmed yet.

“Look At How They Treat Taimur, Misha Or Even AbRam” – Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan and Karan Johar, along with Varun Dhawan were in a puddle of sorts the last weekend after the IIFA. Their skit involved some jokes related to the ‘N’ word – and it didn’t go down well with a majority. Many felt that three industry insiders taking a dig at Kangana Ranaut was unfair, specially because she spoke her mind and the alleged truth.

Soon after, Varun, Karan and Saif apologised for their comments. They said it was all said as a joke which got misinterpreted. But the damage was done. Now Saif wrote an open letter through DNA giving his full and final take on the matter.

Here are a few excerpts from his letter:

“It was not supposed to be a big deal, but I realised at some point, that it might have offended Kangana (Ranaut). I called her and apologised personally. That should be the end of it. Everybody needs to take a chill pill and back off.”

“In today’s world, apologies are made through Twitter or though some other social media platform. That, is basically apologising to your fans and the world in general, instead of apologising to the person concerned, because you don’t want to lose support.”

“I’m sure it’s not the first or the last time I’m going to say something stupid in an attempt to be funny. And I apologised to Kangana, so I don’t owe anybody else an explanation. The issue is over.”

“The real flagbearer of nepotism, I’d say is the media. Look at how they treat Taimur, Shahid’s daughter Misha or even Shah Rukh’s son AbRam. They photograph them and hype them up to be the next big thing and the child has no choice. From a young age they have to deal with being celebrities, which they don’t really deserve, before they can even speak or talk, leave alone understand what is happening.”

“If you say star kids have an advantage, of course, they do. It’s an advantage created by the press because people are interested in them. There is a curiosity to see Taimur, Sara or Ibrahim. It’s supply and demand. People want it, media serves it. So we’re all part of the same vicious circle in that sense.”

Karan Johar, Saif Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan and the art of the non-apology

Also known as World Nepotism Day. Also known as the day that one of the biggest sh*tstorms of Bollywood commenced. Also known as the day that Kween Kangana took a big fat mirror, mirror on the wall and held it up to the bad bully of tinsel town.

This day marked the start of Karan ‘flag bearer of nepotism’ Johar’s new identity. It was also the day that the strugglers and the outsiders found a shining, albeit minuscule, beacon of hope.

It was the day that Kangana Ranaut appeared on Karan Johar’s (in)famous chat show Koffee With Karan and left Bollywood as we know it — shook (pardon me, my millennial is showing).

Several controversies later, the Hindi film industry was in the news once again at the IIFA 2017 awards function held in New Jersey — as three of Bollywood’s beaming products of nepotism waved their privileged silver-spoons in the air as they cracked tasteless wisecracks about a strong and unfiltered individual in her absence.

Now I’m all for jokes, even dark humour (AIB roast — hilarious), but when you take a hot topic that affects many (Mumbai isn’t known as the City of Dreams for nothing; outsiders swarm in millions to make something out of themselves here) and make light of the matter on an influential public platform — juxtaposing an issue that many face discrimination over, with ‘yo mama, yo papa’ jokes, especially when you are the very force that forms the driving factor behind said discrimination — then it is clear that you are bullies. Plain and simple.

What followed is a tradition in Bollywood — if there is a statement, there will be a retraction.

Behold, the outpouring of ‘heartfelt’ apologies and ‘genuine regret’ while looking at the incident in hindsight. Behold carefully crafted words scripted by PR representatives of the stars, with the sole purpose of doing damage control before their client’s reputation is blown to smithereens.

So here we have Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan and Saif Ali Khan taking to various social media platforms and giving exclusive one-on-one interviews where they are deeply apologetic over what has transpired.

Because it’s not like they didn’t know they were going to crack the joke right? It’s not like they didn’t conceive, conceptualise and consequently pen the whole damn thing down in their pre-written script for the most awaited award function of Bollywood.

Nope, the joke came out of nowhere, hit them smack in their face and took them by complete surprise; much like their papa-mumma’s legacy.”

Make no mistake, there will be countless more Karans, Saifs and Varuns that will make such comments in the future, just because they can. Because they were born into a family that had already established a name for themselves and these kids were none too happy to accept that, and flaunt it.

Let’s see how Karan Johar would have made his directorial debut without such ease if it weren’t for veteran director Yash Johar a.k.a Karan’s Papa. How Saif Ali Khan would have gotten his big break if it weren’t for yesteryear’s beloved star Sharmila Tagore. How Sara Ali Khan is getting her big break because of her dad. How Varun Dhawan would have blown us all away with his impeccable comic timing without comedy king David Dhawan.

There’s no denying that these individuals are talented — they wouldn’t have been able to sustain themselves in the industry if they weren’t (*cough* Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Esha Deol *cough*), but their parents’ legacy had a lot to do with the turbo push that they received which propelled them towards immediate stardom.

Because what mind boggling level of privilege would you have to come from to actually feel entitled, moreover comfortable, to make the joke ‘Nepotism Rocks’!?

One thing is for sure — Saif, Karan and Varun may not yet have mastered their craft, but they sure have mastered the Art of the Non-Apology.

They will because they can, and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do about it.

Announcement! Anushka Sharma and Varun Dhawan to star in Yash Raj’s Sui Dhaaga – Made In India

Wait, what just happened? Perhaps the coolest project announcement! Anushka Sharma and Varun Dhawan are coming together for Yash Raj’s upcoming movie, Sui Dhaaga – Made In India. Are you all shocked? Well, so are we. It was so out of the blue that it actually took us a few seconds to sink in the news. However, now that we’re accustomed with the idea of this new jodi, we are super pumped up! Can you imagine? Varun and Anushka in a hatke movie? Well, we certainly took time to digest this news but it’s quite a big deal. The duo have NEVER worked together and hence, it would be interesting to see what this new pair from Yash Raj brings us. the film’s script has been written by Sharat Katariya of Dum Laga Ke Haisha and will be produced by Maneesh Sharma. We have to admit though, their way of breaking the news was very quirky and kickass. When they started exchanging cryptic tweets on Twitter, we thought perhaps it might have something to do with Jab Harry Met Sejal’s song, Beech Beech Mein.

But man oh man, were we in for a surprise. They subtly announced their next project! It started with Anushka writing a riddle on her Twitter, “आगे आगे मौजी भैया, पीछे पीछे पूँछ,बढ़ते जाएँ मौजी भैया, घटती जाए पूँछ।बोलो क्या? @Varun_dvn” Well, what can you infer out of this? But Varun gave an ultimatum that at 12, he’ll come back with an answer, “बहुत मुश्किल पहेली है – हेल्पलाइन लगेगी। आज रात 12 बजे बताता हूँ।@AnushkaSharma” Which he did as he tweeted, “सुई धागा। is the answer anushkaaaa @AnushkaSharma. I know this answer is extremely special to you.” The diva confirmed the title and replied, “सौ बटे सौ! चलो अब पिक्चर बनाते हैं साथ में – मज़ा आएगा ? @SuiDhaagaFilm @yrf” well, there you go, the name of their upcoming next! Varun then signed off by stating, “आप से सौ अंक प्राप्त करने कि खुशी में मैं अब सोने जा रहा हूँ आप के साथ एक फिल्म बनाना मजेदार होगा Anushka @SuiDhaagaFilm @yrf”

Hope we don’t have to break down the riddle to you. It’s pretty evident now that the answer is out in the open! According to a report on Hindustan Times, Varun has been quoted saying, “From Gandhiji (Mahatma Gandhi) to Modiji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi), our country’s leaders have always endorsed the ideology of ‘Made in India’. With our film, I am proud to take their message to millions of people in a relevant manner.” On the same, even Anushka commented, “It’s a story of self-reliance that I believe will connect with every Indian. And I am really looking forward to work with Varun and the team of Maneesh and Sharat.” Sui Dhaaga is set to go on floors in January 2018 and will have a Gandhi Jayanti release on the same year! How cool is that?

Tell us your thoughts on this in the comments box below!

Badrinath Ki Dulhania: Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s crackling chemistry makes the film watchable

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan have won fans with their last few outings on the silver screen. This is in fact becoming one of the most loved on screen couples of Bollywood. The last two times Alia-Varun came together they delivered a hit. No wonder the young stars have fan clubs named “Varia”and “Valia”. Now you’d want to know how this duo has fared in their latest Dharma Productions venture Badrinath Ki Dulhania directed by Shashank Khaitan. Do the Humpty Sharma trio recreate the magic this time around? Well read our Badrinath Ki Dulhania movie review to find out…

#What’s it about

The film revolves around the lives of a rich yet not spoilt brat, Badrinath Bhansal aka Badri (Varun Dhawan) from Jhansi and an ambitious young girl Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia Bhatt) from Kota. While Badri’s only motive in life is to get hitched to Vaidehi with whom he fell in love while dancing at a wedding, Vaidehi has bigger ambitions in life and battles to fight. The duo has different plans in life, except that Badri will not take a no for an answer and wants to desperately win over Vaidehi. He’s unable to understand how this young girl can resist such a perfect guy, whose only credential is that he belongs to a rich family. Badri is a tenth grade pass who hasn’t even attended college and has no regrets admitting that he works for his dad as a loan money recovery guy. Vaidehi on the other hand is literally aiming for the skies. The rest of the story you will get a sneak peek at just looking at the theatricals.

#What’s hot

VARUN DHAWAN! Yes, Varun as Badri will remind you of the best of both Salman Khan and Govinda. He has the star power of Salman, a great body like the Dabangg hero and looks super hot in this film. His comic timing and emotional scenes will really make you believe that he’s indeed the true successor of Govinda. Varun lends himself so well to the comedy-drama genre. Varun steals the show from every other character in the film and trust me there are quite a few who stand out. There are a few scenes in particular where he’s super entertaining and endearing. Like for example, when he tries to woo Alia and realises that he’s indeed not a match for her and breaks down before his friend Somdev (Sahil Vaid) or then the scene where he sees his lady love go far away from him and achieve success he’s both proud and emotional. He’s hero who isn’t the macho who will just beat up the baddies and take a punch for his ladylove. He is the lover who doesn’t mind sharing responsibilities and taking on the kitchen and laundry duties, while celebrating his girlfriend’s success.

Alia Bhatt plays her part well, she is convincing as Vaidehi a go-getter who doesn’t mind breaking rules of the society. She will speak her mind and is feisty and super ambitious as she is soft hearted and guilty of hurting Badri. Badri’s friend Somdev is one of the best characters in the movie and so are his brother Alok Bhansal (Yash Sinha) and sister-in-law Urmila Shukla (Shweta Basu Prasad).

The film has a good blend of comedy and drama. Despite a comic touch to his role, Varun manages to make you feel for his character. This is a movie where Dhawan Jr is the most endearing. And yes, the Tamma Tamma song is placed at the perfect point, just before the filmmaker is about to lose out interest that is.

#What’s not

The second half falters and the efforts to incorporate Singapore tourism is too on your face. While we see Badri and Vaidehi’s relationship build, the build-up itself is a little boring. One particular scene that is supposed to deal with a grave issue of sexual attack on Badri is made into a not so tasteful joke. Again the film is too predictable and in fact right before the interval the twist too becomes a little too predictable. The movie could have been edited better. The climax is almost like the makers were in a hurry to sum up their film. It’s shoddy and a very strong message gets lost.

#What to do

Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan prove that their pair means a bona fide success. Shashank Khaitan gives you a movie that you can relax with family and friends on an extended Holi weekend. Go watch it especially for Varun Dhawan!

Badrinath Ki Dulhania Got A UA Certificate On This One Condition

Alia Bhatt & Varun Dhawan

Alia Bhatt & Varun Dhawan

We are all really looking forward to Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan‘s Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The film releases on the 10th of March. Reportedly, the Censor Board has given it a UA certification but on one condition – the makers of the film have to obtain an NOC from Shaadi.com.

The website is mentioned in the film a few times and recently, at the time of RunningShaadis.com‘s release there was some controversy about using “dot com” in the title and the film. The Board wants to stay clear of drama this time around.

“Full Credit To Natasha For Sticking By Me” – Varun Dhawan Finally Confirms His Relationship

Varun Dhawan, Natasha Dalal

Varun Dhawan, Natasha Dalal

Varun Dhawan is one of the most good-looking actors in Bollywood currently and is a hot favourite with all the girls. Unfortunately for them, this dishy actor is taken. Varun has been in the news for his relationship with his childhood sweetheart Natasha Dalal for years now. While Varun has never denied his relationship with her, he has always refrained from directly talking about it. The two were spotted at Shahid Kapoor’s birthday bash and were also clicked together on Valentine’s Day.

In a new and interesting turn of events, Varun finally spoke with abandon about his relationship and being seen in public with Natasha in an interview with India.com.

I am cool about it. In fact, I’ve always been cool about it. There’s nothing to hide. I just don’t want the focus to shift from my career to the relationship. That’s why I don’t talk much about it. What can one say about spending time with loved ones? I’m not denying anything at all, just that I don’t like to discuss it.”

When asked about where he sees the relationship going, here’s what he said.

I see it reaching a good place. (Smiles) She’s quite a handful so full credit to her for sticking by me. She’s one of the best people I’ve come across in my life.”

Awww, finally! :D Remember when Varun spoke about how he’s in a phase where he wants to get married and have children, in an episode of Koffee With Karan? Do you think the time is finally arriving? Either way, we’re just glad he’s finally talking about it! :)

Varun Dhawan Was Turned Away From The Polling Booth – Here’s Why

Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Elections 2017 are taking place today all over Maharashtra – and a bunch of Bollywood celebs turned up to exercise their right. Varun Dhawan was one of those responsible citizens, but unfortunately, he was not able to vote.

The actor reached the polling booth in Juhu accompanied by his brother, Rohit Dhawan. When Varun’s turn to vote came, he was reportedly told that his name was not on the list. He tried to find his name on the list and even made a few calls to resolve the issue, but in vain. He eventually walked out without casting his vote.

But hey, at least you tried. Next time, Varun!

Varun Dhawan confirms two of the most talked about Bollywood affairs on KWK 5

Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan

Who would have thought Varun Dhawan, who is himself so privy about his own love life would go on the national television and give out an official confirmation on someone else’s affair? But this happened! Varun, on tonight’s episode of Koffee With Karan 5 finally broke his silence on two of the (not-so)’alleged’ couples of B-town – Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra; Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani. Yes! Can you believe it?

It’s all thanks to Karan Johar who put Varun in the spot not once but twice through a rather controversial rapid fire around. He asked him what is that one thing that Tiger Shroff has and he doesn’t and Varun without even thinking twice said, “Disha Patani” and mind you, he was not a bit apologetic over spilling the beans. Just when we thought that was about it, Karan then shot another baller by asking him what does Sidharth Malhotra have that he doesn’t and you won’t believe how Varun slyly shifted closer to Alia and started playing with her hair. You know like one of those times when you want to say something but you can’t say it and everything in the room eventually gets your hint? That’s exactly what happened. Varun made his point without saying much and Alia, who obviously became the center of attraction, could not stop blushing. Aww…

Well, I agree somewhere we all knew Alia-Sid and Tiger-Disha are very much together but then coming from someone like Varun is definitely an addition to the buzz surrounding these young lovebirds of B-town. By the way, it’s also a matter of worry for Tiger right now given that Varun just couldn’t stop crushing on Disha on Koffee With Karan 5. At one point in time, he even looked at the camera and apologised saying, “Sorry Tiger” But then of course, everything is fair in love and war, isn’t it?

On that note, here’s much love to the sweethearts of Bollywood!

MOVIE REVIEW: Varun Dhawan, Akshaye Khanna And The Dog Deserve Better

Untitled

Dishoom had so much potential. Three good-looking leads (one is also a good actor), an interesting trailer, Parineeti Chopra‘s abs and Akshaye Khanna making another comeback after a hiatus of 4 years but the result was just meh. The plot is good on paper – the star cricketer of the Indian cricket team, Viraj Sharma (Saqib Saleem, playing a character based on Virat Kohli) has been kidnapped before India plays against Pakistan and he needs to be found in 36 hours before the public finds out about it. Two men are supposed to find him, one is like Veeru, the other is like Jai.

Their names are Javed (Varun Dhawan) and Kabir (John Abraham) and they call each other J & K, the references are not lost, because we love Men In Black. The bad guy (Akshaye Khanna) plays the cleverly named Wagah because he doesn’t belong to India or Pakistan. Jacqueline Fernandez plays Ishika, a kleptomaniac with a troubled past who apparently gets turned on whenever Kabir is mean to her. I don’t get this about movies, why do they show the girl falling for a boring guy who is horrible to her? In a scene, Kabir, who is a tough inspector, literally threatens to break her face and that makes her pupils dilate.

Anyway, the chronicles of J & K to find the Viraj before the match begins in the main crux and what would have been a funny action-adventure film, becomes really boring after Kabir stares at someone menacingly for the zillionth time. John Abraham is basically himself as the brooding Kabir, Rohit Dhawan has made sure he doesn’t have to do much but look threatening. Varun is hilarious as Javed, the actor has shown his flair for comedy in his dad’s Main Tera Hero and inDishoom he plays the earnest ‘non-sidekick’ extremely well. It’s his shenanigans which make the first half of the movie seem breezy enough. He sadly doesn’t have the backing of a good screenplay to make the entire film a fun watch. Jacqueline is pretty but she really doesn’t have much to do. Akshaye is great as always, as the villain who is involved in the betting business, the need for him to kidnap Viraj is established too, but by the time the guys manage to save the day, you’ve just lost all interest. Also, my expectations from Mr. Khanna are too high to be happy with this role.

There’s another Akshay in the movie too, the Khiladi sports a man-bun and makes John and Varun strip in the pool. He plays a sexed up homosexual and makes erotic references to Varun and John’s bodies, because Bollywood can sometimes time-travel to the ’90’s and ‘the gays’ are just horny weirdos without personality or layers, like normal human beings.

Nargis Fakhri is there too, and she looks amazing, as always. Saqib is nicely cast as the badass cricketer and Satish Kaushik is brilliant as the voice behind the man who constantly trolls Javed on the phone (that track is one of the best gags in the movie). Rahul Dev is nice in his role and those dhoti pants look really, really comfortable. All the actors (except John) have done a good job, but Rohit Dhawan and Tushar Hiranandani‘s screenplay is disappointing during the second half. Nitin Rokade and Ritesh Soni‘s editing is often erratic and Ayananka Bose‘s cinematography is sleek. The standouts in Dishoom are Vijay Raaz, who is in one scene where he cuts John to size and that adorable dog named Bradman who plays quite a pivotal role.Pritam‘s music is a let down.

Dishoom is not ground-breaking, but no one expected it to be, and while it does manage to make us laugh in a few scenes, the rest of the movie is quite boring. Varun Dhawan, Akshaye Khanna and the dog deserve better.
